At 18, Tray loves his family and boxing, and juggles school and the dreaded college-application process with a part-time gig at a Brooklyn Starbucks -- until one day he's at the wrong place at the wrong time, ending his life. It's one thing to see a news report about the senseless death of yet another African-American teen, it's another to experience it through the eyes of that boy and his family. Inspired by actual events and seamlessly shifting between memory and reality, playwright Kimber Lee's brownsville song (b-side for tray) is a poetic and powerful tale of innocence, violence and the struggle to hold on to hope. This regional premiere comes to Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati.
