What You'll Get

A bold, gritty, heart-wrenching drama, Katori Hall's Hurt Village makes its Bay Area premiere at Oakland's Grace Temple Church. The story centers on a Memphis housing project after a government Hope Grant ignites the relocation of its residents. In the middle of it all is Cookie, a 13-year-old girl who aspires to be a professional rapper in the face of her seemingly insurmountable socio-economic situation. She lives in a community ravaged by drug addiction and violence and cheapened by empty government promises. Life is one unceasing existential crisis for this young black girl, as she and her family struggle to relocate and improve their way of life in a society where virtually no value is placed upon their lives.
