For his first museum exhibition in the United States, the lead singer of the world-famous Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós created an experiential artwork flooded with scent, sound, and light. Jónsi’s FLÓÐ evokes an emotional response inspired by the seascapes of Seattle and Reykjavik. Changing environmental conditions within the gallery engage the visitors’ senses of hearing, sight, and smell to transport them to the ocean. Composed for the installation, Jónsi’s mellifluous music plays through speakers that engulf the room with spatialized surround sound. This audio installation, augmented by a choir composition and field recordings, simulates the experience of a wave traveling the length of the gallery. The scent of seaweed harvested from both the Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans has been tinctured and distilled for disbursement through the room. The darkened gallery filled with mist and fog captivates the audience as a thin strip of light overhead moves with the sound wave.

General Admission tickets to the National Nordic Museum may be used to enter at any time between 10am and 4pm. It is recommended that you allow at least 20 minutes for FLÓÐ (Flood) by Jónsi (please note that this exhibition contains atmospheric effects such as darkness, fog, distilled scent, and sudden lights). Your tickets also allow you to tour the rest of the Museum at your own pace. You may leave and re-enter during the same day as ticket date.
