What You'll Get
Winner of the 2015 Fischoff Competition, the most prestigious chamber competition in the U.S., the Zora Quartet continues to rack up awards across the country and world. It certainly lives up to its name (zorá being the Bulgarian word for "dawn"). In 2014, it had the honor of being the string quartet in residence to perform and study manuscripts at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, Germany. Now Zora Quartet makes its much-anticipated Portland debut at the Oregon Music Festival with works by the event's spotlight composers Schumann and Stravinsky. Stravinsky's Three Pieces for String Quartet is famously based on a trio of Russian folk songs, while Schumann's elegant Op. 41, No. 1 is one of Zora's signature pieces, as is Debussy's quartet in G minor, an early work of the inventive Frenchman's, that floats along on modern, ethereal harmonies. Zora's violinists Dechopol Kowintaweewat and Seula Lee, violist Pablo Munoz Salido, and violoncellist Zizai Ning have played Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, among other noted venues, and are set to become the new Graduate Quartet in Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music in the Fall of 2016.
