What You'll Get
Love hurts, but is it supposed to bleed? It is if you are Kayleen and Doug, the poignantly accident-prone couple at the heart of the tender comedy Gruesome Playground Injuries. Tracking the 30-year relationship of these "scar-crossed lovers," the plot by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph twirls outward in nonlinear fashion from their first meeting as 8-year-olds in the school nurse's office. She has a stomachache; he, an ugly gash on his forehead. It's the beginning of an on-again, off-again romance woven with the connective tissue of physical and emotional trauma. Sara Rae Foster (Masters of Sex, Mob City) and Jeff Ward (Manson's Lost Girls) star in this hilarious and heartbreaking love story about the intimacy between two people who allow their defenses to drop and their wounds to show. Gruesome Playground Injuries' darkly comic tale gets underway at L.A.'s Hudson Backstage Theatre.
The running time is one hour and 10 minutes.
