Mandolins aren't just for hipster bands and folk artists -- this lute-esque stringed instrument also plays a key part in the classical and Italian baroque traditions, as you'll hear when the Classical Mandolin Society of America convention brings together many of the country's best players at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge for several concerts. In the first, focusing on local musicians, the Media Chamber Chorale joins the Munier Orchestra and Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble to present a stirring version of Vivaldi's Gloria. In the second, the critically-acclaimed Modern Mandolin Quartet takes the stage to perform signature tunes from their vast catalog of seven CDs, including their Grammy-nominated 2011 disc Americana. MMQ will be back for the finale, which also features the En Masse Orchestra, made up of more than 175 convention participants on mandolin, mandola, mandocello, guitar and double bass.
