Established in 2011 by an Egyptian ethnomusicologist and an Ethiopian-American singer, The Nile Project is founded on the belief that music has the power to change perceptions and inspire action. In fact, it's that belief that gave the orchestra its name, as they're dedicated to empowering -- through music -- the diverse and sometimes conflicted communities that live along the more than 4,000 miles of the Nile River. Composed of a dozen musicians that represent each country bordering that river, the musicians in the band use varied rhythms and play a diverse set of instruments -- everything from Sudanese harps and Ugandan adungu lyres to Egyptian flutes.
