"Fresh," "youthful" and "edgy" aren't adjectives ordinarily associated with a string quartet, then again The Calder String Quartet is far from an ordinary ensemble. Don't let their (relative) youth fool you. The Calder Quartet is widely recognized as one of the nation's best: The California-based foursome has been hailed as "outstanding" and "superb" by The New York Times, and "first-rate" by The New Yorker. Already the choice of many leading composers to perform their works, the group fully embraces all the music they play, whether it's a program of Beethoven and Mozart or sold-out rock performances with the likes of Vampire Weekend and the National. Now for this appearance at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica -- where the quartet is Artists-in-Residence -- the assemblage will continue to explore Beethoven's string quartets, pairing them with contemporary works commissioned especially for this series.
