Tiburon Walking Tour #2: From the Coming of the Railroad Until Today

On this walking tour, you’ll learn about Tiburon’s history as a blue-collar, rough and tumble railroad town from 1884 until 1967. You’ll learn about the major events and historic figures of this time, including: The Donahue brothers, who brought the industrial revolution to California by way of Tiburon, the fires that virtually destroyed the town three times and how the town dealt with Prohibition, how Al Capone figures (twice!) in Tiburon’s history. Then you’ll learn about more modern history, including some of the Tiburon Peninsula’s notable residents, the decline of the railroad and Tiburon’s transformation into a suburban community and tourist destination. Find out how the dedication of two families helped maintain Main Street’s early 1900s character, and how conservationists fought hard to maintain the area’s physical beauty and small-town character. Learn about local landmarks like The Railroad and Ferry Depot Museum and its working model of the 1909 Tiburon rail yard, The Arks and the creation of Ark Row.

Additional Information:

Please contact the tour leader, Elliott Brown, at elliott@tiburonwalkingtours.com, the day before your tour to confirm your attendance and that the tour will be going as scheduled and to provide names for name tag purposes.

If you are the only tour participants, there will be no refunds for cancellations within 24 hours of the tour’s scheduled start time. If there are others on that day’s tour, you may be given the opportunity to reschedule.

Tour will not go with fewer than two people.

If it’s a warm day, you might bring along a bottle of water to stay hydrated. And think about applying sunscreen.

If you have concerns about standing for 1½-2 hours, know that there are benches along the entire tour route, so you will be able to take short rest breaks.

If you are driving, be aware that on-street parking is unmetered, but is limited to two hours, so if you arrive early and park on the street, you might want to check your tires for chalk marks before beginning the tour, or choose to park in one of the $5.00-for-all-day parking lots on the east side of Tiburon Boulevard (left side when approaching downtown).
