It holds copies of files you’ve recently used; when you try to access something, the CPU will first check to see if it can make the short, fast trip to the cache to retrieve it rather than going all the way to the RAM or the hard disk. When you’re using the internet, your browser also keeps a cache. If you return to a page you’ve already visited, it will fetch you a copy from the cache rather than requesting it again from the server where it’s hosted.
