A Chat with Gracie Barra Rohnert Park
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Our clean, safe, family-oriented facility is a perfect place to teach your children to feel safe every day, whether they are at school or outside playing—while also developing their self-confidence and discipline. All instructors are approved, trained, and certified by Gracie Barra Headquarters.
What’s one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
It’s best to arrive 15 minutes before the start time of your scheduled class. This gives you ample time to change into the traditional BJJ gi (uniform), get a drink, and even socialize with fellow students. Stretching prior to your visit is not necessary as each class begins with a group warm-up.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Gracie Barra was founded in 1986 by Master Carlos Gracie, Jr., with the goal to share his family’s martial art with the world. Bullied as a child, Professor Bill began training in Brazil at a young age and knew that one day he too would be able to help kids with his own academy in the United States.
What do you love most about your job?
It is very satisfying to have a quiet and timid child begin to train jiu-jitsu and then to see their confidence and self-esteem grow over time as they learn to control their body and apply the techniques they are taught. Even better is to watch that now-confident child help to teach a new student.
