Scaling (Plaque and Tartar Removal) A hygienist uses either an ultrasonic scaler to vibrate and remove large pieces of tartar, or a handheld scaler to scrape off plaque and tartar from the teeth surfaces and gumline. Suctioning is used throughout to remove debris.

Polishing After scaling, the teeth are polished with a high-powered electric toothbrush and a gritty, special-flavored paste, often called prophylaxis paste. This removes any remaining biofilm and stains, leaving the teeth smooth.
