Visitors examine more than two dozen multimedia exhibits and at least one guitar while exploring the 30,000-square-foot musical repository. Tours proceed from the top down, first launching guests up four floors to stroll through the Songwriters Hall of Fame gallery and displays devoted to timeless artists, including Stevie Ray Vaughn and Sam Cooke. Proceeding down a level, visitors examine one-of-a-kind artifacts that depict the style and legacy of Michael Jackson as well as an operational recording studio with instruments ready to be played. Traveling exhibits grant guests a fleeting glimpse of special collections, such as the current George Harrison: Living In The Material World and the upcoming Golden Gods: The History of Heavy Metal.

The second floor’s 200-seat Clive Davis Theater screens films during museum hours and hosts both member-exclusive and public programming that profile prominent musicians and famous key signatures. The flagship series, An Evening With, features award-winning artists, such as Brian Wilson, Damian Marley, and Mavis Staples, who share stories from their career during an interview and audience Q&A. Robert Randolph, Raphael Saadiq, John Legend & The Roots, and other artists have participated in The Drop series, where musicians celebrate a new album release by playing new tracks and explaining the inspiration for their LP.
