Originally invented by bored henchmen looking to pass the time at Doctor Berserko’s secret Antarctic lair, hockey has since overtaken polo and unicycle jousting as America's pastime. Soak up the icy action with today’s Groupon, which gets you one lower-level center-ice seat for $10 at an upcoming Grand Rapids Griffins hockey game (a $20 value). Choose from the following games:
- Wednesday, February 16 at 7 p.m. against the Hamilton Bulldogs
- Sunday, February 20 at 4 p.m. against the Peoria Rivermen
- Sunday, March 20 at 4 p.m. against the Rockford IceHogs
- Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. against the Toronto Marlies
An AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, the Grand Rapids Griffins gear up and get down on their home ice, which is lovingly surrounded by more the than 12,000 seats in the Van Andel Arena. Boasting more than 15,000 Facebook followers, this year’s squad of cold-water cruisers is already proving its slap-shot chops, with each player hoping to become the newest name on the list of the 110 Griffins who made the leap to the NHL. With the 2010–11 season in full swing, the Griffins are poised to make a cold, hard statement in the volatile North Division.
Both Sunday games feature Fun Day specials, such as giveaways and $1 breadsticks and soft drinks throughout the first hour of thunderous puck passing and textbook zamboni assists. Those who bring their own skates can mimic the players' double lutzes and elegant spins in an open skate after Sunday games, and super fans can collect select autographs from players. If the Griffins conquer the Bulldogs on February 16, all ticket purchasers can redeem their ticket stubs for a free lower-level pass to the Oklahoma City Barons game on March 16.
To snag a seat for the competitive icecapades, simply select a desired matchup and arrive at the box office with a Groupon, a dream, and, if possible, a large yelling-cone.
