Grandma J's Local Kitchen
Humboldt Park isn't a farm, but people might be able to imagine it's one as they look out on its green expanse from the windows at Grandma J's. That's because all the food here is made from farm-fresh ingredients, a homegrown approach that owner Layla Malia inherited from the three generations of women who taught her how to cook. In fact, the place is a nod to Layla's mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; a striking portrait of her mom hangs on the eatery's wall, and the like-home dining room is furnished with countless tchotchkes and curio cabinets.
But back to those ingredients. They're sourced from local purveyors including Slagel Family Farm, Roeser's Bakery, and Lincoln Quality Meat Market, and they come together to create a menu that's comforting in its simplicity. "Then comes the relief," Time Out Chicago said of ordering at Grandma J's. "The relief of a no-stress menu; the relief of recognizing every ingredient." During brunch, that's half a free-range chicken atop a fresh waffle, or buttermilk biscuits blanketed with homemade sausage gravy. Even the fries and pickles are housemade, teamed up with sandwiches such as a grilled cheese with broccoli, spinach, and red-pepper aioli.
