Meeting the Texas Department of Public Safety’s required 10 hours of training, this class qualifies students to apply for a state concealed-handgun license, or CHL. Nine hours of classroom study covers firearms basics such as safe handling and proper storage, as well as nonviolent conflict resolution and the legal rights and responsibilities that come with holding a CHL. Students then spend one hour on Great Southwest Gun and Archery’s air-conditioned shooting range. If students pass both the written and shooting tests, instructors provide them with the paperwork necessary to apply for a CHL.
This deal includes range fees, eye and ear protection, and a target; it does not include ammo, which costs an additional $16.99–$26.99 for 50 rounds depending on caliber—9 mm, .380, .40, or .45 ACP. Gun rental is included with ammo purchase. Any additional fees associated with submitting a CHL application to the Texas Department of Public Safety are not included. The schedule typically slates classes on select weekdays and weekends.

About Great Southwest Gun and Archery
The sound of gunfire cracks on the shooting range at Great Southwest Gun and Archery, yet it’s never heard by the bowman on the adjacent archery range, who lets his arrow fly toward a bull’s-eye. Great Southwest’s climate-controlled, 20-yard indoor range ably absorbs both pistol and rifle calibers up to .45 ACP, and a ventilation system quickly filters the air of lingering smoke and errant particles. Next door, the 25-yard archery range caters to bowmen, giving them both dedicated and 3-D targets on which to test their marksmanship. In addition to open shooting, the ranges also host classes in shooting and archery under the direction of experienced instructors, some certified by the state to teach the Texas Department of Public Safety’s concealed-handgun-license curriculum. The pro shop accommodates both types of sportsmen as well, staffed by technicians versed in firearm services from cleaning to custom builds, and bow services such as changing strings.
