In addition to hockey matches and televised presidential debates, roller derby is one of the few competitive events to tacitly allow body checking. Witness a contact-heavy competition with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get two tickets to the Green Bay Smackers’ home opener against the Fargo, North Dakota-based Rock City Riot on Saturday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Skaters Edge Roller Rink in Appleton (a $20 value). Doors open at 6 p.m.
With a compelling combination of action-filled play and offbeat on-rink nicknames, the Green Bay Smackers skate, spin, and score as Wisconsin’s men’s nonprofit roller-derby team during the first match of their inaugural season. Tote along a pal and a lawn chair to the May 21 bout against the Rock City Riot, or sit rinkside in one of the suicide seats, which, like a dentist’s set of electric mouthsaws, sound more dangerous than they are. While the men warm up by tossing around medicine balls filled with tiny helmets, a women’s roller-derby mixer will kick things off at 6:30 p.m., showcasing fierce female skaters from around the state. Following the high-energy opener, the Smackers will take to the rink and begin their Saturday-night campaign to jam, block, and roll their way to victory.
