Today’s Groupon is a masterpiece painted with history and tinted with booze. For just $10, enjoy $25 worth of food and drink at Green Door Tavern, a historic bar in the heart of River North. It's the perfect lunchtime destination to enjoy with co-workers and the boss or the perfect dinnertime destination to enjoy with your building’s doorman.
Green Door Tavern serves up deliciously rich pub grub. Chow down on hefty sandwiches like the B.A.L.T, a toasted stack of crunchy bacon, avocado, lettuce, and ripe tomatoes on whole wheat. If you’re looking for finger food, grasp onto battered rounds of oniony delight, gooey plates of chili-drenched nachos, and bite-size hot dogs with all the fixings.
The tavern is a wooden wonder, smack-dab in the middle of modern architecture and hip condos, making a lovely link to the past. The building, which dates to 1872, has survived a fire, three Cloverfields, and a car crash that took out the northeast corner. It has also housed a speakeasy, restaurant, and grocery store. Inside, it looks like a tavern-themed I Spy ghostwritten by Fran Drescher. Find a seat at one of the teeny tables dotting the floor and admire the cozy clutter of Tiffany-style lamps hanging from the ceiling, cutesy sayings and black and white photographs tacked onto the walls, and old-time advertisements covering the columns for Mad Men aficionados who do all shopping in a time machine.

Centerstage Chicago suggests a visit to the Green Door Tavern “should be mandatory for all Chicago residents” and Yelpers and Zagat reviewers agree:
- One of my favorite places for lunch when in the area. Great atmosphere out on the enclosed porch section. – MarvC2419, Zagat
- I end up here about once a week for lunch, as I work in the neighborhood. The specials here are superb, particularly the Tuscan Turkey Club and Chicken Curry Sandwich. – Aaron C., Yelp
- The Green Door Tavern (or GDT as my friends and I so lovingly call it) is one of the best undiscovered bars in Chicago! First, what makes it so stand-out for a bar is that they have the best food I think I've had in any bar nationwide. – Liz D., Yelp
