What You'll Get

Before museums, historians had to rely on unreliable documentation strategies such as word-of-mouth storytelling and images scrawled on Etch-a-Sketches. Immerse yourself in an accurate portrayal of recent American history with today's Groupon: for $15, you get a tour (a $25 value) of the Ground Zero Museum Workshop, located on West 14th Street in the Meatpacking District (not at Ground Zero). Tours take place Sundays and Mondays at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.; Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and Saturdays at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Inspired by the Netherlands’ Anne Frank House for its ability to turn large-scale tragedy into a powerful collective memorial, the Ground Zero Museum Workshop displays 100 images and artifacts that were integral to the 9/11 recovery effort. Lauded by CNN for its vast collection that gives ordinary citizens a chance to see Ground Zero through the eyes of firefighters and recovery workers, the museum’s collection houses dozens of images by Gary Marlon Suson, the official photographer at Ground Zero. Named an FDNY Honorary Battalion Chief for his work, Suson is the founder of the museum and a dogged documentarian of the initial rescue.

During the two-hour tour, guests also hear the story of some of these artifacts—from tools used for on-site digging to World Trade Center steel and window glass—from one of the museum’s encyclopedic guides, some of whom participated in recovery efforts. Additionally, each tour taker gets a set of headphones for a self-guided audio tour of the museum, which includes real sounds from the Ground Zero recovery effort and is now available in Spanish, French, and Italian, as well as English. With no graphic footage or images from the attacks, the tour is appropriate for children and families.

Please call (212) 924-1040 between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to reserve your spot on the tour.

About Ground Zero Museum Workshop

Ground Zero Museum Workshop founder and official photographer at Ground Zero for the Uniformed Firefighters Association, Gary Marlon Suson aims to lend education and comfort to locals and visitors with a photo exhibition documenting nearly nine months of the Ground Zero Recovery. As various artifacts culled from the site's rubble complement an image collection lauded by the New York Times, the space stands as a permanent museum detailing the buildings, victims, heroes, and aftermath of the tragedy. To further its cause, Ground Zero Museum Workshop shares raised funds and proceeds to benefit three special charities relating to the 9/11 attacks. The Museum was also named by TripAdvisor as one of the top 25 museums in the USA.
