The 44-acre Grove Winery serenades its guests and its grapes on the third Friday of every month, as well as some holidays, with the 2011 outdoor concert series. Concertgoers and grape connoisseurs alike receive a VIP parking pass, a table with four seats from which to catch sounds in ear mitts, and four beverages, choosing among Grove Winery's nectars and a selection of soft drinks. Crooners, pickers, strummers, drummers, and blowers typically begin the show at 6 p.m. and take their bows around 9:30 p.m., supplying a song-filled summer night away from the stresses of taming the garden, cleaning the children, or ordering the children to scrub the garden until it sparkles. Pack a picnic basket full of snacks to complement the wash of music, then toast the troubadours with the fermented fruits of the Carolina environment, such as Grove Winery’s merlot, sangiovese, traminette, tempranillo, and award-winning nebbiolo and cabernet franc. Or show up early and cut a swath across the tasting room, open from noon until 6 p.m. every day.
Grove Winery and Vineyards
While in Sonoma on business in 1992, tech entrepreneur Max Lloyd fell in love with the fermented grape. Though his father and grandfather had been in the business of winemaking, it wasn't until his encounter with California-grown, European-style varietals that he resolved to dabble in the family trade himself. Launched as a part-time project in Virginia and transplanted to its current location in 2001, Grove Winery and Vineyards culls its grapes from two estate vineyards that span more than 70 acres in addition to a handful of local vineyards. The staff meticulously handpicks the grapes and gently presses them with a basket press to yield their fresh milk.
