The Issue: Arts Education Improves Academic Performance
According to a report from Americans for the Arts, kids who are involved in the arts are more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, elected to class office, and participate in a math and science fair. However, the cost of arts programs can be prohibitively expensive for many families.
The Campaign: Dance or Music Lessons for a Gifted Student
If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then Chicago Dance Institute can sponsor one child in a year of classes in dance or a musical instrument. Each additional $500 raised will go to sponsor a year of classes for another child. The scholarship will go to an exceptionally talented student in grades three–five from one of Chicago Dance Institute's in-school programs. Selected students will receive personalized attention from a professional instructor with advanced training in a private studio.

Chicago Dance Institute
Chicago Dance Institute incorporates dance into elementary-school curricula to teach creativity through music and movement. It uses dance as a catalyst to inspire children to work hard and develop confidence and methods for self-expression. During its two-week residency program, Chicago Dance Institute sends two professional dancers into elementary schools to teach dance to children in grades three–five for 45-minutes every day. The classes, set to music from a live pianist, percussionist, or guitar player, guide children in practicing steps and hand motions. The lessons also encourage students to engage in social interaction and improve empathy and conflict resolution skills. At the conclusion of the two-week program, the students get to perform for their peers during the day and for their parents and community members later that evening.
