The Issue: Importance of HIV Testing
Of the 1.2 million people in the United States living with HIV, 20% of them are unaware of their infection, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When individuals are aware of their HIV status, they are not only able to receive the necessary medical care, but can also make positive changes in behavior to reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
The Campaign: HIV Tests and Safe Sex Kits for Young Adults
If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then Chicago House and Social Service Agency can provide 100 rapid HIV tests and safe-sex kits to young people between the ages of 16 and 21 who are experiencing homelessness, with matching donations from an anonymous donor up to $5,000. The safe-sex kits include condoms, lube, and educational materials that teach youth how to protect themselves and their partners from contracting HIV. Chicago House will also help any individuals who discover they've contracted HIV by connecting them to primary medical care and counseling services. Each additional $10 donation will be used to provide two more HIV tests and safe-sex kits.
All donations will be matched up to a $5,000 total by an anonymous donor.
