The Issue: Hunger Among Seniors
More than 5 million seniors in the United States face the threat of hunger. A poor diet for these individuals can exacerbate existing health problems, interfere with prescription medications, and increase the risk of stroke.
The Campaign: Providing Meals for Homebound Seniors
If this Grassroots campaign raises $484, then Cincinnati Area Senior Services can deliver a week's worth of meals (seven total) to 10 seniors through its Meals on Wheels program. Every meal includes 3 ounces of protein, two servings of vegetables, one serving of fruit or juice, 8 ounces of milk, and two servings of bread or starch to meet FDA requirements. Each additional $11 raised will be used to provide another homebound person with two days' worth of meals.
You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.
Cincinnati Area Senior Services
The Meals on Wheels program administered by Cincinnati Area Senior Services (CASS) provides homebound seniors with nutritious meals prepared according to FDA guidelines and the dietary needs of the recipients. Two thousand seniors in greater Cincinnati rely on CASS for a daily meal, and for some it may be the only meal they eat that day. CASS staff members deliver food on a daily or weekly basis for clients depending on their preference. The arrangement also provides the homebound seniors with regular check-ins and friendly visits. As the largest Meals on Wheels provider in the Cincinnati area, CASS delivers more than 250,000 meals a year, helping seniors remain independent and live in their own homes.
