The Issue: Lack of Access to Healthful Food in Low-Income Areas
According to data cited by Children Now, over the past 30 years, the cost of fruits and vegetables has risen almost twice as fast as the cost of carbonated beverages. Additionally, low-income neighborhoods typically have more fast-food restaurants and fewer supermarkets than wealthier neighborhoods, and many low-income families must shop for everyday groceries at small convenience stores with a limited selection of fresh produce.
The Campaign: Fresh, Locally Sourced Produce
Each $10 donation to this Grassroots campaign will allow the Orange County Food Bank to provide 12 5-pound bags of locally sourced, seasonal fruits and vegetables to young people in low-income areas of Orange County. Through its Farm2Kids program, a partnership with California's Children's Power Play! campaign, the Orange County Food Bank helps educate elementary-school children about the importance of a nutritious diet and exercise, and provides at-risk children with fresh produce on a monthly basis.
To celebrate the launch of Groupon Grassroots, Groupon will provide a $1,000 kickoff grant to this campaign.
Orange County Food Bank
A program of Community Action Partnership of Orange County, the Orange County Food Bank distributes 19 million pounds of food annually, serving 900,000 people directly. It also provides food and personal-care items to more than 400 other helping organizations including churches, shelters, and senior centers. At the food bank's warehouse, volunteers receive and package 23,000 boxes of food each month, which its clients can pick up at 50 sites across the county.
