The Issue: High Rate of Obesity in Alabama
Alabama was ranked the second most obese state in the country, and its obesity rate has doubled in the past 15 years to 32.3% of the adult population, according to a report by Trust for America’s Health. High rates of obesity contribute to other serious health problems including heart disease and diabetes.
The Campaign: Funding Healthy Chili Cook-Off Participation
If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then Healthy Huntsville can sponsor participation in the Healthy Chili Cook-Off for 10 low-income families. Each additional $10 raised will go toward purchasing vegetables and fruit for the Healthy Kids Field Day and future Healthy Huntsville events. The Healthy Chili Cook-Off takes place Sunday, July 15, at Joe Davis Stadium and includes competition categories for meat-based chili, vegetarian chili, and a kids' cook-off for competitors younger than 18. The cook-off is designed to introduce the community to new methods of preparing healthful, delicious food.
You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.
Healthy Huntsville was recently founded as part of a collaboration between the city government and local businesses that aims to foster healthier behavior in the community. It teaches Huntsville residents how to maintain good fitness levels and eating habits and raises awareness about these issues among young and low-income community members. To achieve its goal of improving health in the region, Healthy Huntsville runs more than 100 free events for residents including Alabama's largest yoga class, TED video screenings, and cook-offs that promote healthful food.
