The Issue: Low Exercise Levels Among Spinal-Cord-Injury Population

Coronary-artery disease and other ailments related to a lack of exercise have been emerging as a major cause of death among individuals with spinal-cord injuries. Though cardiac disease occurs in 6.9% of the general public, it affects nearly 17% of the population with spinal-cord injuries, according to an article published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Not only can exercise help prevent cardiac disease, but it can also reduce the loss of muscular function, thereby minimizing the development of disabilities, loss of mobility, and physical dependence.

The Campaign: Engaging Spinal Cord Injury Clients in Wellness Programs

If this campaign raises $120, then the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at Kennedy Krieger Institute can sponsor one client in its Life Through Motion wellness program for three months. The equipment within the center is specifically designed to meet the needs of patients with spinal-cord injuries. It also offers a space where clients can meet others who are dealing with similar challenges. Each additional $120 raised can sponsor another person for three months in the program.
