What You'll Get
The Issue: New Mothers and Perinatal Mood Disorders
Postpartum depression and other perinatal mood disorders can affect new mothers any time during pregnancy and the first year of their children's lives. These disorders are illnesses, yet the pervasiveness of many myths about them can cause women to feel closed off and at fault. For women with postpartum depression though, having a support group and being able to talk about their challenges is just as important to recovery, if not more so, than counseling and medication.
The Campaign: Creating Support Groups for New Mothers
If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then Jenny's Light can develop and publish a curriculum guide—including eight session outlines and a DVD that will be used during sessions—to replicate its Circle of Moms program in Minneapolis. Each additional $50 raised will be used to develop and publish another session outline.
Last year, Jenny's Light launched the Circle of Moms program, which offers a welcoming space for women to meet twice a month, discuss the challenges of motherhood, build a network of supporters, and develop strategies for self-care. Due to the pilot program’s success, Jenny's Light plans to create a resource guide to help certified support groups launch Circle of Moms programs in other cities. In order to replicate the program elsewhere, the organization will develop a curriculum guide with at least eight session outlines, a support resource packet, and a DVD featuring experts and survivors that will be used during group sessions.
