The Issue: Lack of Arts Education for Youth

In Washington state, 75% of elementary students receive two hours or less of arts education each week, according to a report from ArtsEd Washington. The report also points out that arts education is frequently the first to be cut during school budget crises.

The Campaign: Busing Students to a Musical Performance

If this Grassroots campaign raises $450, then Kirkland Performance Center (KPC) can fund bus transportation for 180 schoolchildren from East King County to attend a matinee musical show. Each additional $150 raised will allow another busload of 60 children to attend the performance.

School-year matinees entertain and educate youth with Shakespeare, Chinese folk tales, and shows with rescued animals. Students in the free or reduced-price lunch program qualify for free matinee tickets to provide them with access to the performing arts. KPC arranged its first student matinee as a show for a local class, and the center created a program to provide bussing to the show. Since then, KPC has raised money through its School Bus Fund to enable students from low-income neighborhoods to attend shows.

Kirkland Performance Center

Kirkland Performance Center (KPC), which was planned and constructed for more than a decade, now consists of an intimate, 402-seat space that showcases musical, theatrical, and dance performances. In addition to its professional performances, KPC reaches out to the community with youth programming. It presents nine student matinees each year from companies from around the country, with educational topics and entertaining themes such as Dr. Seuss's The Lorax and the scientific presentations of Doktor Kaboom!. Led by education outreach director Wes Andrews, the shows introduce youth from underserved neighborhoods to performance art and include a follow-up question and answer session to further engage the students.
