The Issue: Extreme Heat in Austin
In extreme heat conditions, the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature, making older adults, young children, and sick or overweight individuals more likely to suffer from heat disorders, according to Austin's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Stagnant atmospheric conditions and poor air quality can induce heat-related illnesses, so protective measures should be taken, including proper installation of air conditioners.
The Campaign: Buying AC Units for Homebound Individuals
If this Grassroots campaign raises $1,080, then Meals on Wheels and More can provide energy-efficient window air-conditioning units to eight homebound individuals. Each additional $120 raised will provide an air conditioner to another person.
You can follow the progress of this and other Grassroots campaigns at the Groupon Grassroots website.
