What You'll Get
The Issue: Outdoor Experiences Aid Recovery from Addiction
Experiencing nature can help someone recovering from substance addiction find activities that they can invest themselves in. According to Drug & Alcohol Addiction Recovery magazine, “Learning to have fun without drinking or using drugs is one of the most common problems recovering alcoholics and addicts face.” By hiking and camping in the great outdoors, they can greatly improve their morale, build relationships, and achieve meditative calmness, which can help prevent relapse, according to research in Time magazine.
The Campaign: Outdoor Excursion for Recovering Adults
If this Grassroots campaign raises $300, then Next Step Recovery can guide an outdoor adventure for six adults who are recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. Each additional $300 raised will fund an outdoor adventure for another six adults in the early stages of recovery. Next Step Recovery organizes weekly Sober Adventures that explore state and national parks, as well as the Appalachian Trail, to keep morale high among residents as they learn how to combat boredom without drugs or alcohol. The outings also give participants an opportunity to bond with their neighbors outside of group sessions, as they learn how to camp, raft, and hike among the region’s rugged mountains and lush forests.
Next Step Recovery
Next Step Recovery is a transitional-living program for adult males who are recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. The program combines a structured environment with traditional treatment plans—such as the 12-step program—augmented by life-skills training, case management, employment assistance, and relapse prevention. An onsite clinical-addictions specialist helps residents meet their individual needs on a regular basis and the home-like setting helps them settle in to the program, with family-style dinners to bolster their sense of well-being. Residents attend relapse-prevention and self-help groups during the evening and complete chores, school, or volunteer work during the day. They also engage in outdoor adventures every Sunday to gain new skills, get in touch with nature, and find healthy ways to fight boredom. Upon exiting the program, the residents work with professionals to reintegrate into society.
