The Issue: Falls Among Older Adults
Among adults aged 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of injury and death. In 2008, more than 19,000 individuals died from fall injuries, according to data reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To help prevent these injuries and deaths, older adults and those with disabilities can make their homes safer by improving lighting and adding stair railings and ramps.
The Campaign: Installing Home Handicap-Accessible Ramps
If this Grassroots campaign $500, then Rebuilding Together South Sound can install a handicap-accessible ramp at the home of a local low-income resident who is elderly or coping disabilities. Each additional $500 raised will be used to install a handicap-accessible ramp at another home. The organization currently has 14 people on its waiting list to receive new ramps.
