The Issue: Young Girls Feel Pressure About Appearance
72% of girls aged 10–17 reported that they felt “tremendous pressure” to be beautiful, according to a global study conducted by Dove in 2011. Feeding this pressure are the everyday concerns many young women face, including bullying and the increased sexualization of women in the media.
The Campaign: Help Inspire Confidence with Girls' Day Camp
If this Grassroots campaign raises $280, then Smart-Girl can sponsor a week of its day-camp programs for one girl. Each additional $280 raised will fund a week of day camp for another girl. The camp does not turn away any girl seeking a scholarship. Sponsorship covers a full week of attendance and mitigates the cost of counselors, art supplies, and site fees. The Smart-Girl camp runs programs during the day that promote healthy living and self-confidence in girls aged 11–14.

Smart-Girl, Inc. teaches girls the skills they need to become confident and successful young women. It conducts school programs and leadership camp sessions that tackle difficult issues such as bullying and self-destructive behaviors. During the programs, small groups of girls gather with two high-school- or college-aged guides for activities that promote self-confidence. Lessons on leadership, gender stereotypes, critical thinking, and body image and the media are designed to help participants develop socially and emotionally. The girls can also make friends while creating crafts or listening to music at summer-camp sessions.
