The Issue: Teens Experiencing Homelessness in Chicago
Teen Living Programs reports that 9,000 Chicago-area youth experience homelessness every year, and on any given night roughly 2,000 youth do not have a home to sleep in. For these young people, every day comes with new risks, from physical or sexual assault to health problems. Unaccompanied youth who are homeless also are more likely to experience violence; become dependent on drugs; and develop anxiety, depression, or posttraumatic stress disorder.
The Campaign: Distributing Survival Kits to Teenagers
If this Grassroots campaign raises $500, then The Honeycomb Project, in partnership with Teen Living Programs, can distribute survival kits to 25 teenagers experiencing homelessness. Each additional $20 raised will fund the materials for another survival kit. On November 17, volunteer families will pack the survival kits with snacks, toothbrushes, soap, and socks for young people participating in Teen Living Programs' emergency-outreach efforts. The kits not only provide teens with essential supplies but also help to encourage community connection.
The Honeycomb Project
Two Chicago moms, Kristina Lowenstein and Catherine Tannen, shared a desire to volunteer locally with their families but had trouble finding events that fit in their schedules and could accommodate both children and adults. So in 2011 they joined forces and founded The Honeycomb Project in celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. The Honeycomb Project organizes special events throughout the city where local families can volunteer together and improve the communities in which they live. Volunteers of all ages can contribute their time to area food pantries and parks, scrambling eggs for breakfast, building nature trails, and testing water quality. Working alongside experts, they help address issues that affect the entire community, such as homelessness, literacy, and the environment. For 2012, The Honeycomb Project aims to organize more than 24 projects, combining the efforts of more than 700 volunteers in more than 1,000 service hours for local organizations.
