The Issue: Milwaukee Youth Living in Poverty
Milwaukee's poverty rate rose to 29.5% in 2010, with 171,521 people—including nearly half of the city's children—living below the poverty line, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Such living conditions can make it difficult for families to provide necessities such as school supplies for their children.
The Campaign: Provide Youth with Backpacks
If this Grassroots campaign raises $300, then United Way of Greater Milwaukee can provide school backpacks for 50 Milwaukee-area youth. Each additional $15 raised will be used to purchase a backpack and the necessary school supplies to start the school year. Students will receive the backpacks during the Milwaukee Child Health Week's Annual Back to School Health Fair when they show up-to-date shot records or receive the necessary immunizations at the fair.
