Struck in copper-nickel from 1859-1863 before the composition was changed to bronze, the early Indian Head cents are fondly called “white cents” for the pale appearance of the copper-nickel. These prized Civil War-era coins kicked off the series considered America’s most beautiful 1¢ coins. The obverse depicts Liberty wearing an Indian headdress and the reverse features a shield and the denomination one cent within an oak wreath.
