More than 72,000 people living in Mecklenburg County lack easy access to fresh produce because of food costs and the dearth of affordable grocery stores and markets within a reasonable distance from their homes. Cooks Community Garden aims to help all community members access healthy, fresh food through its volunteer-run community garden and in-depth classes about gardening and cooking designed to equip those living in so-called “food deserts” with the skills to grow and prepare their own food.
In addition to maintaining 20 gardening plots—as well as a plot specifically set aside for growing free organic produce for those in need—Cooks Community Garden plans to host classes in the coming year to encourage individuals to begin gardening as a way of lowering food costs and removing obstacles to accessing fresh, seasonal produce. Anticipated classes will cover topics ranging from gardening basics to grilling vegetables and keeping backyard chickens.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help Cooks Community Garden hold classes to encourage individuals to begin gardening. If G-Team members raise $300, then Cooks Community Garden can send 30 individuals to one class about growing and preparing local food. Each additional $10 raised will be used to send another person to one class.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
