According to the Ontario Association of Food Banks, food-bank use in Ontario has grown since 2008 at an unprecedented rate of 28 per cent. Feed the Need in Durham fights to prevent local hunger by delivering perishable and nonperishable donated food items to food banks, shelters, soup kitchens, and breakfast-feeding programs throughout the Durham region.
Partnering with more than 40 neighbouring agencies, Feed the Need distributes between 135,000 and 150,000 pounds of food each month, providing nutritious meals to more than 50,000 people. Transport trucks make the program possible by picking up and dropping off large shipments of donated items. With $140 in funding aid, Feed the Need can refuel one of these delivery trucks. That tank of gas will go toward providing nearly 21,000 meals to nearly 15,000 people in the Durham area.
