Energy Star–approved spiral compact-fluorescent lights (CFLs) use 75% less energy than a traditional incandescent bulb and last at least six times as long. Consequently, homeowners who replace 25 traditional bulbs with CFLs save more than $1,000 during the lifetime of the energy-efficient lights, and reduce their carbon footprints by an amount large enough to offset a year of gas emissions from an average car. To accelerate the positive impact of CFLs on the environment and on local residents' electric bills, Green Light New Orleans provides the spiral bulbs free of charge, and organizes volunteers to install them in area homes.
Under its Citizens for Light initiative, Green Light New Orleans aims to install 343,829 CFLs—one for every resident of the city—by May 1. Any inhabitant of the greater New Orleans area may request CFLs, regardless of income. If Green Light New Orleans meets its goal, local residents will save nearly $16 million on their utility bills while reducing the city's carbon footprint by 154 million pounds of CO2.
Join G-Team and donate $8 to help Green Light New Orleans provide energy efficient light bulbs to local residents. If G-Team members raise $320, then Green Light New Orleans can make 160 CFLs available as part of its Citizens for Light initiative, saving owners more than $7,000 on their electric bills during the lifetime of these bulbs. Each additional $8 raised will provide four more energy efficient lights to New Orleans residents.
