According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 19 percent of adult Texans cannot read an English newspaper. Adults who are unable to read English may have difficulty understanding medicine labels, writing grocery lists, filling out job applications, or interpreting street maps. Literacy Advance of Houston helps adults achieve self-sufficiency through English-language literacy classes.
Literacy Advance provides free classes that teach adults in the Houston area English as a second language. In 2010, Literacy Advance developed stronger literacy skills for 3,416 people and trained more than 360 new tutors. Volunteer tutors teach five students in each class how to read English with the use of picture dictionaries and textbooks, focusing on the skills necessary for gaining employment, utilizing health-care access, earning an education, finding housing, and navigating street maps. Literacy Advance provides training, books, and supplies for students in its ESL classes, but more than 350 people are currently on the waiting list to attend, stretching the organization's budget.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help improve English literacy among local adults. If G-Team members raise $300, then Literacy Advance of Houston can fund supplies, textbooks, and tutor training for two ESL literacy classes with five students each. Each additional $150 raised will fund another ESL literacy class for another five students. The first 50 G-Team members who redeem their Groupons on Literacy Advance's website will receive half off one item at Blue Willow Bookshop.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100 percent off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
