One-hour tutoring sessions help students in foster care to perform at grade level after transitioning to new schools
Children in foster care change schools approximately once every six months. In part as a result of this constant state of transition, 75% of foster children fall behind one grade level, only 54% age out of the foster system with a high-school diploma, and only 2% earn a bachelor's degree, according to data from the Children’s Project Academy. As part of its efforts to support children in the foster system, The Mecklenburg Guardian ad Litem Advocacy (GALA) Foundation organizes programming to help students perform at grade level in the face of frequent school transitions.
The Mecklenburg GALA Foundation's Beyond the Classroom program provides afterschool programs for children in foster care, including tutoring sessions for students of all ages in any school subject. During each one-hour tutoring session, held at the tutoring facility, school, or foster home, an experienced tutor works with a student who has transitioned to a new school or needs help with his or her studies. Depending on the needs of the student, the tutoring can range from supplemental help to assisting students in catching up to his or her grade level so that he or she can successfully graduate from high school and move on to college.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help provide tutoring services for children in foster care. If G-Team members raise $300, then The Mecklenburg Guardian ad Litem Advocacy Foundation can provide 20 hours of tutoring for children living in foster homes in the Charlotte area. Each additional $30 raised will fund two more hours of tutoring.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
