In a September 2011 study, the News One news organization categorized New Orleans as America's number one food desert —an isolated urban area that lacks access to fresh fruit and vegetables. In an effort to foster equal access to fresh, healthful food, the New Orleans Food and Farm Network's (NOFFN) City Farms Program aims to reform where, what, and how food is grown in city communities. G-Team members who donate $10 to today's campaign will receive free membership to the New Orleans Food and Farm Network, including discounts on workshops and special events and a subscription to its monthly newsletter.
In keeping with its efforts to increase access to fresh food, the NOFFN's City Farms Program created Garden Builds: small, localized garden plots that help to restructure local food systems. The program sponsors 4'x10' raised garden beds in backyards, community gardens, or on school grounds, with the goal help to transform local access to food by providing up to 600 pounds of freshly grown food per bed for low-income families. In addition to supervision throughout the process of installing and populating the garden beds, the NOFFN provides growers with soil, manure, fertilizer, seeds, and pesticides. In the past eight years, the NOFFN has built more than 200 community gardens.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help the New Orleans Food and Farm Network build new community gardens. If G-Team members raise $400, then the NOFFN's City Farms Program can build one raised garden bed, providing up to 600 pounds of fresh food to a community with limited access to fresh produce. Each additional $400 raised will fund the construction of another garden plot in a backyard, community garden, food pantry, or soup kitchen.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
