Playworks Twin Cities promotes a positive learning environment by training young people to engage the younger children in their schools in recess activities. Teachers and administrators report the Playworks program reduces the number of conflicts that originate at recess, ensures students spend more time engaging in physical activity, and encourages more attentive participation in class.
Playworks selects fifth and sixth graders to serve as junior coaches, and trains them to teach active games while developing leadership skills. Junior coaches organize youth play, manage equipment, and act as role models for the young children they lead. During the winter, junior coaches lead indoor play, ensuring that kids still get to warm up the muscles in their bodies, minds, and prehensile tails no matter the weather. Playworks would like to expand its program by training and equipping an additional junior coach at each of the nine area schools it serves.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help Playworks encourage positive activity for young children and promote leadership skills in older children. If G-Team members raise $450, then Playworks Twin Cities can train nine fifth and sixth graders to serve as junior coaches in their schools, and equip each of them with a T-shirt and whistle. Each additional $50 raised will fund training and equipment for another junior coach.
