Points of Light Institute mobilizes individuals to enact change in their communities by sponsoring engaging volunteer opportunities across the country. Points of Light’s volunteer action division, HandsOn Network, is partnering with 9/11 Day to organize a nationwide day of charitable service to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, and the national spirit of unity that followed the attacks. The initiative includes scheduled community projects in a variety of cities, with the goal of completing a total of one million acts of service.
Across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, Points of Light Institute will equip and mobilize volunteers with the tools and funding necessary to complete local service projects organized by Greater DC Cares. To encourage participation in the day of service, many of Greater DC Cares’s corporate partners will give their employees the day off on Friday, September 9. Volunteers will work indoors and out, on projects such as cleaning neighborhoods and parks, restoring memorials, visiting veterans, and painting and landscaping schools and community centers. Then on Sunday, September 11, Greater DC Cares will sponsor a Tribute to Service—a region-wide volunteer fair featuring student-led music and fine-arts tributes and on-site service projects. Among other activities, Tribute to Service volunteers will paint a 9/11-remembrance mural and write honor cards to military families and active-duty service members. While Greater DC Cares has a schedule full of events planned, the organization is still in need of the materials necessary to complete many of the projects, including music performances, trash bags, gloves, paint, landscaping, and boxes.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help sponsor a day of service that will honor the anniversary of 9/11. If G-Team members raise $500, then Points of Light can purchase tools and supplies for charitable service projects across the greater DC area. Each additional $10 raised will go toward funding more service projects during that weekend. G-Team members who want to volunteer can also sign up for an opportunity in their communities.
