What You'll Get

For years, a terrible civil war between burritos and tacos threatened to tear Mexico apart, until Mexicans summarily devoured them both. Keep your cuisine from starting a revolution with today's deal: for $10, you get $20 worth of Mexican fare and drinks at Guadalajara Cafe. Choose between the Kansas City and Lee’s Summit locations.

A collection of white-topped tables welcomes guests to Guadalajara Cafe, where a menu waits with authentic Mexican dishes of pollo, carne asada, peppers, tacos, and more. Diners start their stomachs humming with the café's selection of entremeses (small dishes), including a pair of tamales ($4.50), otherwise known as pork sleeping bags, or the Cheese Crispy, a flour tortilla plastered with melted cheese ($3.75). Nine chicken dishes offer bird-focused options such as the pollo al chipotle, nuggets of chicken breast and vegetables cooked up in chipotle cream ($10.95). Served with rice and beans, the pork chile verde burrito ($6.95) and six other burrito options satisfy appetites before they get too big for your belly, and more than 10 fresh seafood dishes send shrimp, crab, and scallops leaping out of the ocean and landing on plates. Draft beer is pumped from far-off lands ($4.50), and flights of margaritas ($8) and tequilas ($9) let palates wander far and wide without becoming waterlogged.

About Guadalajara Cafe

Guadalajara Cafe shies away from the Tex-Mex standards found at typical Mexican restaurants in favor of the authentic flavors and spices you’d expect to find simmering in a family cocina. Its chefs attended culinary training in Guadalajara, where they developed a special appreciation for the cuisine of Jalisco, a region that extends from central Mexico to the Pacific coast. They even spice up this Jalisciense style of cooking with exotic ingredients such as squash blossoms, nopal cactus, and shrimp wearing tiny safari hats to create dishes reminiscent of those first envisioned by the Aztecs.

The result of their dedication to tradition is a menu of central Mexican classics such as chilies rellenos drizzled in spicy tomatillo sauce, hand-rolled tamales, and tacos filled with charbroiled, citrus-marinated meats. In her blog Around the Block, Mary Bloch—the author of the Kansas City Star’s restaurant guide—lauds the eatery’s mole, calling it “as good as it gets.” Diners can wash down these authentic morsels with a selection of Mexican beers or tequilas infused with jalapeño, cilantro, and tamarind.
