The Magna Carta was originally written in graphic-novel form; then King John of England canceled the project after seeing the poorly inked word balloon containing the "fish weir removal" clause. Today's Groupon celebrates capably created comic books. For $6, you get $12 worth of coffee, comics, café fare, and more at Guapo Comics and Coffee, located in Portland's FoPo neighborhood.
Guapo Comics and Coffee's café slings made-to-order munchies, many of which are organic, for both breakfasters and lunchanados alongside an impressive and constantly updated collection of local zines and indie comics, making for an environment of taste-bud and brain-bud stimulation. The breakfast menu offers essential endo-engine fuel for the day ahead, including an egg sandwich on a bagel ($4), an egg sandwich on an English muffin ($4), and oatmeal ($2.50), best washed down with a banana, strawberry, or blueberry smoothie ($4). Guapo's lunch feeds stomach-books with paninis ($4) and pita pizza ($4) topped with such fresh yums as feta, turkey, ham, and hummus. Additionally, Guapo Comics and Coffee summons the power of locally roasted organic beandom, serving Allann Bros. Coffee Roasters, an Albany-based coffee company since 1972. While customers sip the café's heady brew juice, they'll have a chance to catch up on email or web comics with complimentary WiFi.
Guapo Comics and Coffee also unleashes an ink-and-paint avalanche on mere mortals, with comic books ($3–$30) for all ages and interests. Although Guapo's focus is largely on independent comics, zines, and mini-comics, the store also dips its multi-paneled toe into the mainstream with selections from comic colossuses Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse. New arrivals can be found every week on Guapo Comics and Coffee's blog. Call up your own justice league and get to Guapo Comics and Coffee for reads and roasts.
