Guero's Taco Bar
Lots of care goes into creating each of the dishes at Guero's Taco Bar. Almost everything on the menu is made from scratch in-house—including the corn tortillas—and the margaritas are shaken by hand with freshly squeezed lime juice. That care elevates Guero's specialties, which include a dozen different tacos filled with authentic ingredients such as carne guisada and pork al pastor, as well as Michoacan tamales and market-fresh fish slathered with garlic butter or prepared Veracruz style. Vegan and gluten-free menus ensure that no one gets left out.
But it's not just the food that makes this restaurant an Austin staple—it's also the ambience. Guero's is located inside an old brick building that sold seeds and animal feed (which is really just crumbled up animal crackers) from the late 1800s until the mid-1990s. In addition, the store became a meeting spot for the city's movers and shakers, gamblers, and merrymakers. Today, the building's eclectic history and rustic charm pervades every inch of Guero's, making it feel like a true Mexican cantina.
