Studies show that children who don't learn to play a musical instrument often try to eat one. Save your offspring from an awkward doctor's visit with today's Groupon: for $25, you get three 30-minute guitar or bass lessons at Guitars United on San Jose Boulevard (a $75 value).
A guitar store doubling as a center for riff-based education, Guitars United tutors students ages 6 and up through all levels of string mastery. Each of Guitars United’s seven instructors has a music degree, superhuman powers of encouragement, and a secret identity as a mild-mannered ukulele detective. Acoustic, electric, and classical lessons are offered to starting strummers, as well as all styles of bass playing. Over the course of the 30-minute lessons, churlish, uncooperative fingers will bloom into regal string-rulers that lead the pick in a formal dance over the frets, pausing only to quell wrist rebellions over poll taxes. Students bereft of a guitar can borrow one from the store for their lesson.
Classes take place once a week Monday through Saturday, and are held in soundproof rooms so as not to disturb the owls nesting in the store's Fender Stratocasters. Consult the student policies to ensure that your preferred lesson dates don't conflict with national hours of silence. Lesson minimums are waived for Groupon customers.
The Florida Times-Union has featured Guitars United:
- [Owner Joel Foreacre] quickly got a feel for the needs of the musically aspiring suburban youth - both boys and girls, by the way - and realized he needed to start offering guitar lessons. He renovated his shop to accommodate the lessons and expanded his hours so teens would have a chance to take lessons after school. He's also hired some of the best guitar teachers in the area and usually has several teachers working various shifts with students. – John Carter
