Dancing is one of the oldest forms of courting a partner, alongside writing their name in burning crops and rescuing them from Hades by hiding inside a pomegranate. Compliment coupledom with today's Groupon: for $59, you get two 50-minute private dance lessons and one practice party for one person or a couple at Dance Tonight (a $166 value).
The movement mentors at Dance Tonight transform years of competitive sauntering into personalized dance instruction during one-on-one lessons and soirées designed to help hone skills. Each 50-minute session delves into the basic footwork of up to six ballroom styles including the tango, waltz, cha-cha, and Twitter. Couples, or individuals paired with an instructor, conquer jitterbugs while learning proper hip-swiveling techniques and graceful steps. Courses culminate with a practice party where fledgling foxtrotters display their know-how alongside fellow pupils under the wizened gaze of instructors and imperious fluorescent bulbs.
Dance Tonight instructors conduct introductory lessons that introduce the basic step for 6-8 dances of your choice. Students might practice the salsa and the foxtrot in a single afternoon, or segue from swing into an elegant waltz, all the while developing a preference for those moves that resonate with their bodies. After they've completed these classes, a basic program further hones their focus. Group sessions and parties enable them to rehearse alongside fellow learners, all of whom benefit from the studio's welcoming, judgment-free vibe.
Though the instructors keep the mood smooth and groovy, they're constantly channeling professional experience; owner Francesca Spumoni and her partner Jacek Kozdroj have competed nationally in American Style Ballroom. They can also assist with special events at their venue or on-location, hosting wedding receptions, school dances, and other celebrations.
