Adult-beverage aficionados flock to Laguna Canyon Winery, where they can introduce their taste buds to 16 artfully crafted wines that include prize-winning varietals and locally made favorites. Wine tasters can lap up splashes of raspberry champagne with its berry flavors, or raise their crystal glasses in a toast before downing a sample of 2006 Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon and playing a game of Mad Libs to describe its notes. Take home an armful of wine bottles for leisurely enjoyment, including a 2009 petite sirah, Californian brut champagne, and the aforementioned raspberry champage. Two 16-ounce crystal glasses act as vessels for grape-juice consumption or as cozy, two-room accommodations for goldfish. A portion of sales for Wyland Cellars–brand wines benefit the Wyland Foundation, which supports programs that educate communities on clean water and healthy oceans.
Laguna Canyon’s main tasting room is open Tuesday–Sunday from 11 a.m.– 6 p.m., and is closed on holidays. The downtown Laguna tasting room is open Sunday–Wednesday from 3 p.m.–7 p.m., and Thursday–Saturday from 2 p.m.–8 p.m. Groups of 8 or fewer do not need to make reservations.
Laguna Canyon Winery
Having grown up on a ranch in central Canada, Marlowe Huber already knew about crop harvesting and soil when he began making wine in the early 1980s. He refined his skills still further by studying oenology in Vancouver before embarking on his first wine-business venture with his brother, Darren. Together they ran two wineries in British Columbia for 15 years before opening Laguna Canyon Winery in 2003. Today, staffers pour out a diverse selection of Laguna Canyon wines in the Barrel Tasting Room.
