On the 3-hour kayak tour, the seat can get pretty uncomfortable (and downright painful) on your back after a few hours. Would be nice to invest in some additional padding for the kayaks for those trips. Also, I had a hard time getting a hold of someone by phone and email, and my emails were never returned. Other than that, Jonah was a great guide!

Orcas Outdoors’ seasoned naturalist guides shepherd all levels of paddlers across the land and through the coastal waters of Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands. Three-hour whale-watching kayak tours begin with a 30-minute introduction to paddling and basic sea kayak safety. Guides also instruct their students in the art of reading island tides to identify safe passage and determine when the waves will sing bawdy sea shanties. Groups then silently stalk the islands’ west shores in two-cockpit sea kayaks, searching for sightings of orca and other whale pods as well as otters, seals, and eagles. On all-inclusive overnight tours, tour groups set up camp in Jones Island State Park. Nature navigators lead hikes along park trails to seek out native wildlife and guide six-hour sea kayak excursions, where participants explore deeper waters and forgo the daily stresses of civilization, such as traffic jams and traffic-jam-causing laser-light shows.

At night, adventurers snuggle into provided Sierra tents and sleeping bags, protected from the ground’s icy grip as they recline on Cascade thermarests or scrawl the names of their crushes into the surrounding soil. All meals are prepared using local produce, and may be crafted vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free upon request. Each excursion includes the use of kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and all necessary safety gear.
